We did it and now we only have to wait for it to cure before we install our final sculpture in the garden. Here are a few pictures along the way.

good going class, you can be proud of what you have created. Bravo! I look forward to seeing it installed in the garden. Thanks for inviting me to be a part of this project. All the best, Ann

Here are our three final selections. It has been determined that we need to confine our project to an area no larger than 4′ x 4′. I would suggest we use all the available space. Smaller curves will be harder to create than large curves. When you make your final selection the students will need to create a scale model. Once they have the model they will be able to make supply lists and full size patterns that we will work from on construction day.
How do you want people to interact with this sculpture? When you make your model also cut out an average size person so that you can see how people are likely to interact with the sculpture. Is is too high to sit on, is it perfect for skate boarding, is it too narrow to walk over?
As far as the base is concerned – the final selection and working model will tell us:
1. How many attachment points we have and where each will connect with the ground.
2. Approximately how much this will weigh.
3. if the anchor points are simply to keep it in place or are they acting as a structural element?
by this I mean – the four way bridge is stable on the ground – it is not going to tip over – we only need to anchor it if you are worried that some prankster might try to move it. But it will be heavy so we will want to have a base under it so that it doesn’t sink into the dirt.
The ribbon will need an anchor to keep it from tipping over – this is now a structural attachment.
It would be good if we had a parent with some engineering experience able to advise us on this part of the project. If we have answered the above questions it shouldn’t take an engineer long to determine what we need in the Michigan soil and weather conditions. If I were doing this project on my own this is the point at which I would hire an engineer. It isn’t a big part of the project but it is critical and we need to make sure it is correct.

Charlie and I made it to Nebraska City Friday and found it overcast but dry. After leaving Denver right behind the Windsor tornado the evening before and driving through violent storms all night it seemed like a miracle. We had it installed in an hour and a half and then we were finished until the unveiling on Sunday. The unveiling was wonderful so many really great people there to welcome Caroline back to Arbor Lodge.
